VAT Calculator (UK)

Add VAT to a price, or work it back out of a total. To remove 20% VAT you divide by 1.2 — taking 20% off the total is the most common mistake and overstates the VAT.

Questions people ask

How do I remove VAT from a price?

Divide by 1.2 to get the price without VAT, or divide by 6 to get the VAT itself. A £120 price contains £20 of VAT, not £24.00.

How do I add VAT?

Multiply the net price by 1.2. £100 plus 20% VAT is £120.

What is the reduced rate of VAT?

5% — it applies to things such as domestic energy and children's car seats. Many basics like most food and children's clothes are zero-rated.
